Lynx's Life-Saving Trip to Ontario for Seizure Diagnosis
17 Feb
Summary
- Rescued lynx Lumi traveled to Ontario for advanced neurological diagnostics.
- Tests revealed Lumi suffers from trauma-induced epilepsy due to a past brain injury.
- Lifelong medication will manage Lumi's seizures, enabling her to live comfortably.
Lumi, a rescued lynx found near Swan River with an injured eye, was taken in by the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre in Manitoba. When Lumi began experiencing severe seizures, the center recognized the need for specialized diagnostics not available locally. This led to a significant journey for Lumi, who was flown to Guelph, Ontario, for an MRI and neurology assessment in late January. These advanced tests, conducted with support from the National Wildlife Centre and the Ontario Veterinary College, revealed that Lumi's seizures are likely due to trauma-induced epilepsy, stemming from a brain injury sustained when her eye was hurt. This diagnosis, while serious, offers a positive outlook as the condition is not expected to worsen. Lumi will require lifelong medication to manage her seizures, but this treatment plan will ensure her continued well-being. The specialized trip and care were funded by generous donors, with costs averaging around $50 per day per animal at the center. While her move to the Assiniboine Park Zoo, her planned permanent home, was delayed by her condition, it is still anticipated once her care plan is fully stabilized. Lumi is reportedly a stress-free and happy lynx.
