27 Aug
Summary
- Rakhis made from seeds will be tied to mangrove trees.
- Initiative highlights commitment to protecting coastal forests.
- Vriksha Bandhan promotes forest protection as social responsibility.

A significant number of people are set to participate in a Vriksha Bandhan program at Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary this Friday, where they will tie Maha Rakhis to mangrove trees. This event, coinciding with Rakhi Purnima, symbolizes a deep commitment to safeguarding the valuable coastal forest ecosystem.
The Green Climate Team, an NGO, has been instrumental in this initiative, organizing seed-rakhi-making workshops with students. These rakhis are crafted from indigenous seeds, a practice that began in 2000. The NGO has been conducting these programs annually with educational institutions.
District Forest Officer N Ramachandra Rao highlighted the critical role of mangroves in maintaining ecological balance along coastal areas, describing their protection as a shared duty. He encouraged the public to spread the message of coastal forest growth.
This initiative, originating in Visakhapatnam, has garnered recognition across India. It aims to foster a sense of social responsibility for the protection of not only mangroves but also large and heritage trees, as exemplified by past efforts to save a banyan tree from development projects.
