Mangroves Spawned: From Beach Plants to Coastal Shields
15 Sep
Summary
- Typhoon's power revealed mangroves' vital coastal protection role.
- Plastic waste transformed into silk-like scarves for volunteers.
- Science corridor connects local efforts with global research.
In Tantou Village, mangroves evolved from common shoreline plants to vital coastal protectors, a realization cemented by a 2019 typhoon. This event spurred residents to organize conservation efforts, including regular beach cleanups and pest control for the plants. The initiative later expanded to include researchers, volunteers, and students.
A 2022 encounter with researchers from the Guangzhou Marine Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality Research Association, initially met with suspicion, led to fruitful collaboration. With support from the UN Development Programme, a 300-meter mangrove science corridor was established in 2023, featuring 46 display panels. This corridor facilitates understanding of the ecosystem and connects local conservation work with scientific research.
The partnership has empowered residents, with the local library transformed into a marine science base and a volunteer team of women and children serving as science interpreters. Even academics, like Professor Liang Xiaoting, have joined, leading students in developing ecological courses. This collaborative spirit has extended beyond the village, drawing volunteers from across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area for beach cleanups.
An innovative 'waste-to-wealth' initiative recycles plastic collected from mangroves into silk-like scarves, given to volunteers as a reminder of their contributions. This program has attracted participants from Hong Kong and Macao. Meanwhile, China's mangrove coverage has significantly grown, expanding to 31,000 hectares during the 2021-2025 period, positioning the country as a leader in mangrove restoration. Mangroves, alongside seagrass and coral reefs, are crucial marine ecosystems supporting fisheries, purifying environments, and sequestering carbon.
