River bund blocks rain, threatens floods in Mangaluru
16 May
Summary
- A coffer bund built for an overbridge has blocked the Phalguni river.
- Environmentalists warn of severe backwater flooding due to monsoon rains.
- Toxic industrial effluents and sewage threaten aquatic life and residents.

Environmental advocates have alerted the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner about a coffer bund constructed across the Phalguni river as part of an overbridge project. The National Environment Care Federation (NECF) described the structure as a "gross violation of environmental laws," noting that it obstructs river flow. This obstruction is a significant concern with the southwest monsoon approaching, as it could prevent rainwater discharge, leading to severe backwater flooding in low-lying areas.
The NECF highlighted that the bund is causing stagnation, trapping industrial effluents and sewage. This toxic buildup threatens aquatic ecosystems, impacting fish populations and leading to documented fish kills. It also poses health risks to fishing communities and nearby residents through contaminated groundwater and potential waterborne diseases. The organization has urged the authorities to dismantle the bund before June and conduct a joint inspection with relevant departments.
