Mandovi River Choked by Faecal Coliform
20 Oct
Summary
- Mandovi River shows faecal coliform levels far exceeding limits.
- All 22 sampling locations revealed contamination during high and low tides.
- Pollution source is still under investigation by authorities.
An interim report from the Goa State Pollution Control Board has revealed alarming levels of faecal coliform pollution in the Mandovi River, impacting all 22 sampling sites. The contamination was found to be significantly higher during low tide compared to high tide.
The Goa State Pollution Control Board is actively working to identify the sources of this pollution. Preliminary investigations suggest potential non-point sources like Rio de Ourem, city market drainage, and the Santa Inez creek may be contributing to the microbial load in the estuarine stretch.
The Bombay High Court initiated a suo motu public interest petition following the discovery of hundreds of dead fish in Mala Lake, which feeds into the river. Other water quality parameters for the Mandovi River, however, were found to be within permissible limits. The state government has pledged its assistance to the Pollution Control Board in conducting further surveys to pinpoint the exact pollution sources.
