Record Low Danube Reveals Mammoth Bones in Bulgaria

Ancient mammoth remains have surfaced in northern Bulgaria, revealed by the Danube River's record low water levels. The discovery was made on Wednesday by a local resident near Ryahovo village, who found the bones on the riverbed. Specialists from the Regional History Museum in Ruse identified a lower jaw, two tusks, and possibly a rib. These significant ancient bones are scheduled for removal on Thursday for further scientific examination to precisely ascertain their age and origin.

Museum Director Nikolay Nenov described the find as very important for science, noting that the area has long been believed to have been a swamp where the animal likely died thousands of years ago. The Danube's dramatically lowered levels are a consequence of severe, prolonged heat waves and drought gripping Europe this summer. These conditions have impacted major waterways, including the Rhine, contributing to the unusual exposure of prehistoric artifacts.
