Maharashtra gears up for El Niño with water conservation drive

In anticipation of El Niño conditions, the Maharashtra government is expediting soil and water conservation treatments to enhance groundwater levels. This proactive measure was highlighted by Jitendra Papalkar, secretary of the soil and water conservation department, during an inspection of ongoing works in Pune district villages. Projects such as percolation tank repairs, stream deepening, and the construction of cement nala bunds are being prioritized.

Papalkar stressed the importance of continuing water conservation through the Gaalmukta Dharan-Gaalyukta Shivar and Jalyukt Shivar campaigns. Public participation in desilting and stream deepening is crucial, he noted. Farmers are also being advised to utilize available water economically, store rainwater, and plan its use diligently.

Further instructions were given to prioritize works in overexploited and tanker-dependent villages, ensuring their completion within a short timeframe. These efforts are part of a broader strategy under schemes like Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana to conserve water resources and recharge groundwater, preparing the state for future drought scenarios.
