Maharashtra Acts on Heat Waves: New SOPs Deployed
15 Apr
Summary
- Three new SOPs target outdoor workers, coal mines, and housing.
- Guidelines focus on 15 high-risk districts facing extreme temperatures.
- Measures aim to reduce heat-related illnesses and deaths.

The Maharashtra government has implemented three detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to safeguard citizens from escalating heat wave conditions. These crucial guidelines address the needs of vulnerable populations, specifically outdoor workers, those in coal mines, and individuals residing in areas requiring heat-resilient housing.
The SOPs are strategically directed towards 15 districts identified as having high heat risks, including major areas like Nagpur, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal. The primary objective is to mitigate heat-related illnesses and prevent fatalities, with a particular focus on informal sector workers and low-income groups who are most exposed.
Safety measures for outdoor workers encompass rescheduling tasks based on heat alerts, ensuring adequate hydration with water and ORS, providing shaded rest areas, and enhancing health support. For coal mine workers, the SOP mandates cooling centers, improved ventilation, job rotation, and training on recognizing heat stress symptoms.
Furthermore, the initiative promotes heat-resilient housing through immediate, medium-term, and long-term strategies. This includes the use of reflective roofing, enhanced ventilation systems, integration of green spaces, and climate-sensitive urban planning. Interdepartmental coordination and regular reviews are emphasized for effective implementation by local authorities.
