The Maharashtra forest department is set to explore innovative funding mechanisms, including green bonds and carbon credits, to bolster conservation and afforestation projects. Forest Minister Ganesh Naik announced this initiative, highlighting its potential to secure resources for forest protection and employee welfare. These financial instruments aim to bridge funding gaps for crucial department activities.
The proposal, currently in its preliminary stages, will be overseen by the Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd. This state-owned entity will manage the appointment of financial advisors and bankers. The initiative is crucial for ambitious projects such as planting 300 crore trees, which requires substantial investment.
Additionally, the department plans to enhance facilities and benefits for frontline forest staff, aiming to provide resources comparable to the regular police force. Plans include improved housing, technology adoption like satellite imagery, and better equipment. A new housing complex for forest officials in Bhandup is also under construction.
