10 Jun
Summary
- A foul stench pervades a kilometre-long highway stretch in Madurai.
- Meat waste, C&D waste, and plastics are dumped on roadsides.
- Corporation investigating meat waste source, vows fines.

A foul stench is permeating a kilometre-long section of the Madurai-Trichy national highway, specifically from Othakadai Junction to Karrupayurani Junction. This pervasive odor stems from substantial amounts of waste, notably meat products, dumped alongside construction and demolition debris, and plastic materials on both sides of the road.
Despite Madurai corporation's recent drive to address the issue following numerous complaints from residents and commuters, the cleanup remains incomplete. While waste on one side was removed, a significant portion on the other side of the divider was left untouched. Residents report a continuous accumulation of waste, including rotten meat, leading to a constant foul smell.
A senior corporation official acknowledged the issue, stating that regular garbage collection is in place. The official confirmed an ongoing investigation into the source of the meat waste dumping and assured that the matter would be resolved soon, with fines to be imposed based on findings.
