Madurai Passengers Endure Sun Without Bus Shelters
29 Aug
Summary
- Temporary bus stops lack shelters, exposing commuters to severe heat.
- Passengers, including students, struggle without shade at key locations.
- Corporation officials promise new shelters soon after final traffic review.

Passengers in Madurai are facing significant discomfort as temporary bus stops along key routes remain without shelters. This situation is a direct consequence of the ongoing construction of the Netaji Subash Chandra Bose flyover in Goripalayam, which began in 2023. The absence of adequate shade is exposing commuters, including students from American College and Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women, to severe heat.
Several temporary bus stops, including those near Durga Road, Goripalayam junction, the Tallakulam head post office, and Sangeeth Plaza, lack shelters. Passengers are forced to seek meager relief from the sun using nearby walls and vendor carts. Although remains of older shelters are visible, passengers have endured these conditions for nearly two years.
A senior corporation official stated that a recent inspection identified the need for proper shelters. The installation of these new shelters is pending a final decision on their placement, which must account for anticipated traffic shifts due to the completed flyover. Work to erect the shelters is expected to commence soon after these adjustments are finalized.
