Ludhiana's Waste Rules: Residents Unaware of New Mandates
3 Apr
Summary
- New waste rules require four-bin segregation, but residents are uninformed.
- Ludhiana MC's infrastructure inadequate for collecting segregated waste.
- Awareness programs are yet to launch, causing implementation concerns.

As of April 1, 2026, Ludhiana faces a significant gap in implementing the new Solid Waste Management Rules. The municipal corporation (MC) has yet to initiate public awareness campaigns, leaving residents largely uninformed about stricter waste segregation requirements. The rules mandate four distinct waste streams: wet, dry, sanitary, and special care, a significant increase from the previously attempted two-bin system.
Residents express concern over the lack of communication, questioning compliance feasibility without prior education. Ludhiana MC officials admit their current collection vehicles, managed by private contractors, are not equipped for segregated waste transport. The civic body acknowledges the necessity of improving its own infrastructure and launching comprehensive outreach efforts before enforcing penalties.
The new regulations also address construction and demolition waste, horticulture waste, and prohibit open burning. Event organizers and large residential/commercial entities also have specific segregation and disposal responsibilities. The MC plans to train staff, roll out awareness campaigns, and provide residents with a grace period for adaptation.
