A dyeing unit in Ludhiana, M/s Bharti Scientific Dyers, faces continued closure for failing to pay a ₹6.3 lakh environmental compensation. This penalty was imposed for polluting local water bodies with untreated industrial effluent, a violation established by a joint committee report. The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has prohibited the unit from operating since January 30, 2026, until it obtains fresh statutory consents.
The Punjab government informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that the environmental remediation plan cannot proceed until the compensation is recovered. The unit had sought a waiver and permission to resume operations due to financial distress.
However, the NGT has ordered the unit to deposit ₹1.4 lakh within a month. It also granted a temporary 15-day consent to operate, specifically to verify the functioning of its effluent treatment plant and ensure compliance with environmental norms, with a compliance report to be submitted by the PPCB.
