NGT Orders River Loss Assessment, Carcass Plant Site Found
17 Apr
Summary
- NGT seeks progress report on carcass plant relocation.
- New 2-acre site in Jamalpur Awana identified for the plant.
- PPCB to assess Satluj river damage from old disposal sites.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is actively considering the establishment and operationalization of a carcass disposal plant in Ludhiana. A progress report on the shifting status of the existing plant has been mandated, with the deputy commissioner expected to file it one week before the next hearing.
An alternate site for the carcass disposal plant has been identified in Jamalpur Awana, a 2-acre plot owned by the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana. This proposed location satisfies environmental and zoning regulations, with adequate distances from sensitive areas and fitting within the Master Plan's utility zone.
Furthermore, the NGT has directed the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) to assess the damage inflicted upon the Satluj river due to past illegal 'hadda rodis' (disposal sites). The deputy commissioner has indicated that the relocation of the carcass plant to the new site is expected to be completed within nine months.
