Ludhiana Air Quality Hits 4-Month Low After Rain
24 Jan
Summary
- Ludhiana's air quality reached its cleanest point in over four months.
- The Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to 55, categorized as satisfactory.
- Experts caution that the air quality improvement is likely temporary.

Ludhiana's air quality has reached its cleanest point in more than four months, thanks to recent rainfall. The Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded a level of 55 on Friday, placing it in the 'satisfactory' category. This is a substantial improvement from the 'moderate' pollution levels the city experienced for 21 days this month. The reading on Friday was the lowest recorded since September 17.
While the rain effectively washed away suspended particulate matter, experts suggest this improvement is fleeting. The AQI had previously peaked at 159 on Thursday before the rains began. Authorities are focusing on long-term pollution reduction strategies, including monitoring industrial emissions, vehicular traffic, and construction dust. Environmentalists are urging for sustained action against persistent pollution sources like industrial fuel combustion and waste burning.
On Friday, Ludhiana emerged as one of the cleanest major cities in Punjab, with only Rupnagar reporting a better AQI. Other cities like Mandi Gobindgarh and Patiala, however, remained in the moderate pollution zone. Local activists emphasize the need for regulations on ongoing pollution-generating activities to ensure lasting improvements in public health.
