Londoners Urged: Let Cars Get Dirty Amidst Drought

London is currently facing severe drought conditions, prompting calls for residents to conserve water. Communities Secretary Angela Rayner has urged Londoners to be sensible and refrain from washing their cars while water supplies are under pressure. This advice comes after London experienced its first entirely rainless July since official weather records commenced over 150 years ago, with Kew Gardens recording no measurable rainfall in the month.

The prolonged hot weather has led to a "flash drought" across London and much of England. Thames Water has already implemented a hosepipe ban, and a further £1,000 fine is possible for those who breach it. The city's green spaces have turned yellow and brown, and the Met Office forecasts high temperatures, with amber heat health alerts issued for most of England.

The extreme heat and drought are placing significant strain on the capital's infrastructure and emergency services. The London Fire Brigade has reported dealing with almost twice the number of incidents expected on an average day, with July 29th being its busiest day of the year. Firefighters responded to over 500 incidents, including 63 grass fires in a single day.
