Leopards have been scientifically confirmed in Chandigarh's Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary, a positive ecological development reported after a recent biodiversity survey. Camera traps deployed from November 20 to 27, 2025, captured images of two adult male leopards, establishing their presence after years of indirect signs.
This confirmation signifies a healthy habitat with a robust prey base. The survey recorded 16 mammalian species, an increase from 14 previously noted, including herbivores like sambar, nilgai, and wild boar, with sambar density estimated at 22 individuals per square kilometer.
Beyond mammals, the comprehensive assessment documented 132 bird species, 73 butterfly species, and 13 reptile and amphibian species. This extensive documentation marks the most thorough biodiversity survey conducted in Chandigarh to date.
