A leopard that fatally attacked a five-year-old girl and injured two others has been killed by Forest Department officials near Tarikere. The eight-year-old male leopard was shot on Friday during a complex rescue operation aimed at capturing the animal after its series of attacks on humans in the Byrapura region.
The department had been trying to tranquilize and capture the leopard since November 20, following the death of Sanvi, 5. Despite placing cages and intensive efforts, the animal continued to pose a threat, attacking two more individuals in late November. The escalating danger prompted officials to seek and obtain permission for its capture, dead or alive.
The final operation involved significant resources, including three trained elephants, veterinarians from various locations, and specialized task forces. When the leopard unexpectedly charged towards the veterinarian preparing to tranquilize it, staff opened fire to ensure their safety, resulting in the animal's death.
