Lanzarote Beach Closed: Faecal Contamination Alert
25 Feb
Summary
- Playa Blanca beach in Lanzarote closed due to high faecal contamination.
- Enterococcus faecalis bacteria found poses a risk to public health.
- Bathing ban in effect until new water analysis results are known.

Playa Blanca, a popular tourist beach in Lanzarote, is currently closed to swimmers following the detection of significant faecal contamination in its waters. Public Health officials confirmed elevated levels of intestinal enterococci (Enterococcus faecalis), a bacterium that can cause infections and serves as an indicator of water quality. The presence of these bacteria at the recorded levels represents a clear health risk to the public.
The local authority, the Yaiza Council, announced on Tuesday, February 24, that bathing at the small town beach is now prohibited. This precautionary measure will remain in place for a minimum of 48 hours, pending the results of further laboratory analyses designed to assess the current water quality.
