Lancashire Landfill Smells: EA Fails Residents
24 Apr
Summary
- Councillor criticizes Environment Agency's handling of Fleetwood landfill.
- Residents report health impacts and a 'living nightmare' from odors.
- Concerns raised over flawed air monitoring data and placement.

A local councillor has voiced severe criticism, stating the Environment Agency (EA) is not adequately addressing the persistent odor problem at the Jameson Road landfill site in Fleetwood, Lancashire. For two years, the EA has monitored the Transwaste-run site, which has been the subject of numerous complaints from nearby residents citing health concerns.
Councillor Rob Fail described the EA as appearing 'toothless' and ineffective, noting that the operator has only performed minimal actions. Campaigner Dr. Barbara Kneale highlighted serious flaws in the EA's air monitoring data, obtained through a Freedom of Information request, and questioned the monitor's placement. She stated the monitoring facility is not optimally located to measure hydrogen sulphide concentrations accurately.
The EA acknowledged that communities should not tolerate odor pollution. They have directed Transwaste to cover recently deposited waste to reduce odors and are pressing for urgent permanent capping, work which has now commenced. The agency emphasized that its officers are actively monitoring the situation and will pursue further enforcement action if improvements and odor reductions are not achieved.
