Forest Clean-Up: Volunteers Tackle Lakkavalli Wildlife Range Waste
8 Mar
Summary
- Volunteers cleared litter from Tunga Gate to Gonibeedu.
- Plastic waste poses a significant threat to wildlife in protected zones.
- Campaign organized by Sustira Eco Club and Kuvempu University.

A significant environmental awareness and cleanliness campaign was recently undertaken to protect the ecological integrity of the Lakkavalli Wildlife Range. Student volunteers and government employees dedicated their efforts to clearing litter from the Tunga Gate to Gonibeedu section. This initiative was prompted by the escalating issue of waste, particularly plastic, accumulating in the protected forest area.
Forest officials highlighted the challenges of waste management within sanctuary zones, emphasizing that the forest is not a designated dumping ground. They stressed the critical role of public awareness in preventing further pollution, as the forest department cannot monitor every visitor. The campaign saw the removal of substantial amounts of non-biodegradable waste, which was then transported for proper management.
The environmental drive was a collaborative effort, organized by the Sustira Eco Club and Kuvempu University's wildlife and management departments. Key partners included the Karnataka forest department and Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd., underscoring a multi-stakeholder approach to wildlife conservation.
