Lake Powell Faces Grim Water Forecast
20 Mar
Summary
- Lake Powell's water levels are dropping due to an unusual heat wave.
- Inflows into Lake Powell are projected at 27 percent of average.
- Minimum hydropower levels could be reached by December 2026.

The outlook for Lake Powell has significantly worsened as an unusual heat wave brings record-breaking temperatures to the Western United States. Hydrologists now project that inflows into Lake Powell between April and July 2026 will total only 1.75 million acre-feet, a downgrade from previous estimates.
Federal forecasters now anticipate inflows will be at 27 percent of the average, a stark decrease from the 36 percent projected earlier in March 2026. This reduction is attributed to below-average precipitation and the ongoing anomalous heat wave, which is shifting weather patterns earlier than usual.
Earlier projections indicated that Lake Powell could drop to its minimum hydropower level by December 2026. This critical threshold could jeopardize the ability of Glen Canyon Dam to generate electricity. Meanwhile, extreme heat warnings have led to the closure of several hiking trails at Lake Mead.
