22 Aug
Summary
- Rs56 billion approved for Lahore's largest wastewater treatment plant.
- The project will be executed at Babu Sabu in Lahore.
- The plant aims for full reuse and circular economy in three phases.

The federal government has allocated Rs56 billion for Lahore's largest wastewater treatment plant, slated for launch within six months post-bidding. This significant project, situated at Babu Sabu, represents Lahore's inaugural large-scale wastewater treatment facility. The initiative aligns with Wasa Lahore's master plan and received approval from the Provincial Development Working Party on August 13.
The plant's development spans three phases: a 12-month pre-construction period, 42 months for construction, and a 36-month operations and maintenance stage. Phase I will treat sewage from central Lahore before its discharge into the Ravi River, thereby enhancing the city's environmental health.
Subsequent phases will transition towards complete reuse of treated wastewater. This includes scaling up programs for composting, RDF production, biochar manufacturing, fertilizer pelletization, brick production, and phosphorus recovery. Phase III aims for zero storage and a full circular economy model by integrating all reuse pathways within a resource recovery park.
