Kumbakonam Corporation is pioneering a "Waste to Wealth" initiative, empowering its sanitation workers to upcycle discarded materials into handicrafts and utility objects. This innovative approach, implemented over the last month, focuses on a zero-waste concept and robust waste segregation at source. Corporation Commissioner K. M. Sudha has guided the project, which involves 402 sanitation workers.
Thirteen dedicated workers are voluntarily transforming waste into value-added products. They have been trained through online videos and special classes to create items such as incense cones from daily floral offerings, eco-friendly planter pots from coconut and palmyra husks, and baskets from plastic packing tape. Additionally, wood shavings and plastic waste are being repurposed as fuel alternatives, and disinfected temple garments are being made into doormats.
Plans are underway to market these unique products through vending stalls within Kumbakonam. The proceeds from these sales will be allocated towards the welfare of the sanitation workers. This initiative aims to inspire broader adoption of similar upcycling methods, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability and resourcefulness.
