Summary
- An orphaned elephant calf, Chaimu, was rescued in Kenya in 2009.
- Actress Kristin Davis supported Chaimu's rehabilitation for years.
- Chaimu has successfully reintegrated into the wild herd.
In 2009, actress Kristin Davis discovered an orphaned elephant calf, later named Chaimu, in Kenya's Chyulu Hills. The calf was alone for several days, prompting intervention and placement with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Chaimu began a multi-year rehabilitation process at the Nairobi Nursery.
This rehabilitation involved teaching Chaimu essential behaviors for herd life. She later moved to the Ithumba Reintegration Centre in Tsavo East, where she gradually spent more time with wild elephants, preparing for life outside human care.
Davis continued to champion the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, using her platform to raise awareness about orphaned elephants and conservation. She visited the centers in 2011 and has featured in documentaries like 'Gardeners of Eden'.
Now 16 years old, Chaimu has successfully returned to the wild, demonstrating the lengthy but effective nature of elephant rehabilitation. Her story is now also represented by a sculpture in 'The Great Elephant Migration' art project.
