Kozhikode Faces Water Crisis Amidst Heavy Rains
20 Jun
Summary
- Heavy rains caused siltation in treatment plant filters.
- Water supply disruption affects Kozhikode Corporation and surrounding areas.
- Repairs are underway, with full resolution expected in five to six months.

Kozhikode district is grappling with a severe water supply disruption originating from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) drinking water project. Recent heavy downpours led to substantial siltation in the water treatment plant's filters, forcing the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to reduce supply for nearly a week.
The disruption has impacted the Kozhikode Corporation, two municipalities, 17 panchayats, the medical college, and numerous government institutions. These areas, which normally receive 200 million litres of water daily, are now facing shortages. Elevated regions within the district are most affected, with some panchayats receiving water only on alternate days.
KWA officials stated that while immediate repairs are in progress and expected to conclude within a week, the situation is exacerbated by increased connections due to the Jal Jeevan and Amrut Missions. The long-term solution involves the construction of new plants, anticipated to be completed in five to six months, which will permanently resolve the supply issues.
