Kovalam Beach: Filth vs. Blue Flag Beauty

The once-picturesque Kovalam beach in Chengalpattu district is now marred by significant pollution, including plastic waste, dried fish, and vegetation washed ashore. This deplorable state stands in sharp contrast to the adjacent beach, which has proudly maintained its international Blue Flag certification for the fifth consecutive year. Visitors have expressed distress over the pervasive trash, noting its presence even within the waves, making a relaxing beach experience impossible.

Locals report that the accumulated waste, particularly after recent heavy rains in December, has not been adequately cleared by the local panchayat's conservancy staff. While areas near private hotels and the Blue Flag stretch receive regular cleaning, other sections of Kovalam beach remain neglected. This disparity leads to widespread disappointment among residents and visitors alike.

When the concerning issue was brought to the attention of the district administration, Chengalpattu Collector D. Sneha acknowledged the situation. She stated that solid waste management is a regular duty of the local body and assured that the specific concerns raised regarding Kovalam beach would be investigated and addressed.
