The Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has issued directives to the Andhra Pradesh government concerning illegal fish ponds and environmental damage within the Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary. The CEC has urged the Eluru District Collector to fully support the Forest Department in dismantling these illegal aquaculture operations. This action follows the Forest Department's report indicating insufficient local support and obstructions during demolition efforts.
The committee also requested a detailed report on new encroachments and illegal bunds constructed within the Kolleru lake area. Significant concern has been expressed regarding the provision of electricity to illegal fish ponds operating within the sanctuary. Furthermore, the CEC noted the deteriorating ecological condition of the Atapaka Bird Centre, which is reportedly drying up, threatening resident and migratory bird populations.
The State government has been directed to provide a comprehensive response regarding pollution in Kolleru Lake, specifically from medical waste and pesticide residues. Allegations of disrupted water supply to the Atapaka Bird Centre, negatively impacting the wetland ecosystem, have also been taken seriously. The Eluru District Collector must submit a progress report on pond demolition and pollution control measures.
