In Kollam, Kerala, a bird flu outbreak has been confirmed at a district panchayat-run hatchery in Thottathara, Ayur. Laboratory tests identified the virus as H9N2, a low-pathogenic strain that officials state is not contagious to humans and does not pose a public health risk. This strain differs from the highly pathogenic H5N1. The outbreak began when eight chickens died on January 2, with the total reaching 1,283.
Mortality rates have shown a decline since Sunday, suggesting the situation is being managed. Despite the mild nature of H9N2, postmortem examinations are underway to rule out contributing infections. The animal husbandry department is overseeing these investigations to ensure comprehensive understanding and control.
Intensified surveillance is now active in 16 panchayats surrounding the hatchery, including Ilamad and neighboring areas bordering Thiruvananthapuram district. Control measures are being finalized at the state level by the district animal husbandry officer.
