Kolkata's Green Future: 1.10 Crore Trees to Combat Concrete Jungle
5 Jun
Summary
- West Bengal aims to plant 1.10 crore trees by March 2027.
- Rapid concretisation of Kolkata ignores vital green space norms.
- Future generations will face environmental costs of unchecked urbanisation.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has initiated a large-scale afforestation drive, 'Ekti Gaach Mayer Naame,' aiming to plant and maintain 1.10 crore trees across the state by March 31, 2027. This campaign, launched on World Environment Day, addresses the growing concern over the rapid concretisation of Kolkata and its surrounding urban areas.
Adhikari highlighted that existing building regulations requiring at least one-third of construction project areas to be preserved as green spaces are frequently overlooked. He warned that this disregard for environmental norms, including reduced forest land in North Bengal, is disturbing the ecological balance and will adversely affect future generations' quality of life. The initiative seeks to counter rising temperatures, air pollution, and diminished water retention capacity in urban zones.
The afforestation campaign, coordinated by the forest department, is set to plant at least 1.10 crore saplings over the next ten months. Public participation is encouraged through financial assistance for educational institutions, clubs, and social organisations forming eco-clubs. Adhikari stressed that environmental protection must be a year-round commitment, not just an observance on Environment Day, urging citizens, especially the youth, to actively protect natural resources.
