Summary
- Ailing hippopotamus emerged after three weeks of immobility.
- Treatment included nerve-stimulating medicines, antibiotics, and UV rays.
- Concerns of neurological disease or leg injury were investigated.

A four-year-old hippopotamus at Alipore Zoo has exited its moat after more than three weeks of being unable to move, a condition suspected to be a neurological disease or leg injury. The hippo, named Hippo One, had remained in its enclosure's water pool, refusing to move even for its night shelter. Zoo veterinarians administered nerve-stimulating medicines, antibiotics, and UV ray therapy, which have shown positive results. The animal has begun responding to treatment and is now consuming food.
Zoo officials consulted with experts at Nandankanan Zoo in Odisha, the animal's previous home, regarding suspected neurological ailments. Treatment involved neuro-tonics and antibiotics for a painful swelling in its front leg, possibly from a bacterial infection. Vitamins crucial for nerve function and energy production were also provided. Former zoo vet D N Banerjee suggested a leg injury from the concretized enclosure slope might be a cause, leading to swelling and restricted movement.
