Summary
- Workshop focused on community-led conservation and tradition.
- Discussions covered ethical biodiversity parks integrating knowledge.

Academics, policy experts, and sustainability practitioners convened in Kolkata for a workshop on ecosystem restoration. The event, hosted by the Indian Institute of Bio-Social Research and Development (IBRAD), focused on community-led conservation and the revival of traditional ecological practices.
Discussions emphasized the creation of "ethical biodiversity parks" that blend ecological conservation with cultural and historical knowledge systems. Former civil servant Kalyan Kumar Chakravarty attended as chief guest, alongside researchers, educators, and social sector professionals.
Several speakers underscored the vital role of local communities in conservation. S.B. Roy, founder chairman of IBRAD, stated that initiatives are more effective with direct community involvement in decision-making. He also noted the synergy between digital tools and traditional knowledge for climate resilience.
Indologist Madhu Khanna highlighted "sacred groves" as important biodiversity reservoirs, suggesting their relevance to contemporary conservation strategies. Raktima Mukhopadhyay of IBRAD discussed using geographic data for livelihood-linked environmental programs, especially for tribal communities.
The workshop also addressed employment in sustainability, with Sauraveswar Sen of Catalyst Learning Services stressing the need for structured training in climate action, environmental management, and ESG roles. This is crucial for scaling climate initiatives beyond local projects.
Participants outlined approaches for developing biodiversity parks with integrated water management and indigenous plant species. Organisers indicated that these ideas would require further planning and collaboration.
