Kolkata Breathes Easier: Moderate Air Quality Brings Relief

Kolkata experienced a welcome break from typical winter pollution on Sunday, with air quality registering in the moderate range. Favorable weather conditions, including sunny skies and moderate wind speeds, played a crucial role in dispersing atmospheric contaminants that often plague the city during colder months.

Despite the transient improvement, pockets of higher pollution were noted in areas like Ballygunge and Jadavpur, contrasting with cleaner air in Bidhannagar and Rabindra Sarobar. Meteorologists attributed the improved air quality to effective pollutant dispersal, counteracting early morning thermal inversion, and the absence of common winter fog and haze.

While residents enjoyed cleaner air, health experts emphasized that moderate AQI is not entirely risk-free, especially for sensitive groups. They recommended limiting prolonged outdoor exertion during peak inversion periods. Environmentalists also urged against complacency, highlighting ongoing risks from vehicular emissions, construction dust, and biomass burning in surrounding regions.
