Summary
- Kheoni sanctuary now hosts 10 adult tigers and six cubs.
- Once plagued by illegal tree felling, it's now a tiger haven.
- Eco-tourism initiatives boost local employment and conservation.

Kheoni Sanctuary, located in Dewas and Sehore districts of Madhya Pradesh, has experienced a significant population boom, now hosting 10 adult tigers and six cubs. This resurgence marks a dramatic shift from its past as an area notorious for illegal tree felling.
Conservation efforts, including enhanced protection and the rehabilitation of local villagers, have created a safer habitat. The forest department has also focused on increasing the prey base, ensuring ample food for the growing tiger population.
The sanctuary, spread over 135 sq km of dry deciduous forests, acts as a vital corridor connecting larger tiger habitats. This strategic location facilitates tiger movement across western Madhya Pradesh and the Vindhya Range.
Inspired by this success, the state government aims to develop Kheoni as a model eco-tourism destination. Initiatives are underway to integrate the local community into tourism activities, providing employment as guides and in other services, thereby boosting the local economy.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav recently announced plans to further develop Kheoni as a centre for wildlife conservation and eco-tourism, highlighting its importance beyond traditional tiger reserves.
