NGO Fights Massive Tree Felling Near Chalakudy

Summary
- NGO alerted ministry about proposed large-scale tree felling.
- Felling planned for 'vista clearance' and solar fence restoration.
- Thousands of trees may be felled without proper approvals.

An NGO, Animals And Nature Ethics Community (ANEC), has formally requested urgent intervention from the ministry of environment, forests and climate change and the state forest department. The concern centers on a significant tree-felling operation proposed within the Kodassery notified reserve forest, located in the Pariyaram range of Chalakudy forest division.
The proposed felling is reportedly justified by 'vista clearance' and the restoration of a solar-powered electric fence. ANEC highlights that this activity is planned along approximately 30km of the forest boundary, potentially impacting 10,000-15,000 mature trees. The NGO alleges that tree cutting has already begun in some areas without the necessary statutory approvals.
ANEC's letter further points out that standard procedures for tree felling, which involve enumeration, valuation, and approval by competent authorities, appear to be bypassed. The organization suggests that the proposal's fragmentation into smaller permissions might be an attempt to evade thorough environmental scrutiny, contrary to principles of sustainable forest management.
Marking of trees has reportedly commenced in the Pillappara area, indicating the imminent progression of the felling activities. ANEC emphasizes that prompt action is crucial to prevent the extensive loss of trees and preserve the forest's integrity.
