Summary

- The snails pose health risks, including potential disease transmission.
- Kerala Agricultural University leads a specialized eradication project.

A significant infestation of giant African snails is currently impacting Bison Valley panchayat in Idukki, Kerala. The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has launched a specialized eradication project in response to a request from the Agriculture department. This intervention is critical as the snails pose direct health risks, including the potential transmission of diseases like eosinophilic meningitis, carried by the rat lungworm.
Officials have identified Bison Valley, located near Munnar, as the area with the highest snail infestation in the district, with outbreaks intensifying in Pottankad, Josegiri, and Kochupp. The problem extends beyond farming, affecting residential areas and necessitating urgent containment measures. Ward-level monitoring committees have been established to ensure continuous follow-up and guide the eradication strategy, which is intended to serve as a model for the entire district.
Eradicating the snails is challenging due to Bison Valley's dense cardamom plantations, which offer the damp, shaded environments the pests favor. Previous independent efforts by farmers have lacked sustained success. The KAU's initiative includes awareness camps to educate farmers on effective eradication methods, with a goal to eliminate the snail population within two to three years. Community participation is deemed essential for the success of these efforts.
