Summary
- Six white rhinos are being rehomed to Wingham Wildlife Park.
- The rhinos are from South Lakes Safari Zoo, which closed.
- New habitats at the park double its size for better welfare.
Wingham Wildlife Park, located in Kent, is set to become the new home for six southern white rhinos. These magnificent animals are being relocated from South Lakes Safari Zoo in Cumbria, which closed its doors in December 2024. Park officials expressed their excitement about providing a loving and permanent sanctuary.
The wildlife park announced that updates on the rhinos' acclimatization will be shared, along with individual introductions and visitor access information. The rhinos will reside in a newly constructed Rhino House, part of an expansion project to accommodate a growing wildlife family.
These rhinos will serve as conservation ambassadors, highlighting the importance of protecting African species. The park's recent expansion includes new enclosures for various animals, significantly increasing its site size to enhance animal welfare and visitor viewing.
Globally, white rhino populations are classified as 'Near Threatened,' with approximately 18,000 individuals remaining. Major threats include poaching and habitat loss, primarily driven by agricultural and settlement expansion, according to the WWF.
