Kent Faces Water Shortage for New Homes
15 Mar
Summary
- Water company may struggle to supply thousands of planned new homes.
- Firm faces a £22.46m fine for past water outages.
- A new reservoir is planned for Broad Oak, expected by 2035.

Thousands of new homes planned for Kent may face water supply challenges, according to a water company's recent statement.
South East Water has informed regulators that it anticipates difficulties in supplying water for housing growth beyond its current plans. This comes as the company is finalizing blueprints for approximately 23,000 new properties in areas including Canterbury, Whitstable, and Herne Bay.
The water firm has been under scrutiny, recently confirming a £22.46 million fine for water outages experienced across Kent between 2020 and 2023. Local authorities are increasing oversight of the company's performance.
To address long-term needs, a new £362 million reservoir is proposed at Broad Oak, near Sturry. This project, first suggested decades ago, is not expected to be operational until 2035 but aims to provide crucial water capacity.
