Summary
- Open safari vehicles are now banned in Karnataka's tiger reserves.
- Buses with iron meshes will replace open vehicles for safaris.

Open safari vehicles have been prohibited from operating within Karnataka's tiger reserves and wildlife sanctuaries. This significant change follows a fatal incident at the Dubare Elephant Camp that resulted in a tourist's death. Environment Minister Eshwar B. Khandre has issued directives for the Chief Wildlife Warden to implement this new policy.
The state's tiger reserves, including Bandipur National Park and Nagarhole National Park, will now utilize buses. These buses will be modified with iron meshes and shatterproof glasses to ensure passenger safety. The Minister emphasized that these precautions are crucial for the safety of both domestic and international tourists visiting these wildlife areas.
Further safety protocols include a strict prohibition on tourists disembarking from safari vehicles. Ambulances and first-aid kits will also be standard provisions at safari centers and elephant camps. These comprehensive measures are designed to prevent any unfortunate mishaps, ensuring a secure experience for all visitors.
The Minister acknowledged that while direct attacks on safari vehicles by wild animals have not occurred, proactive steps are essential. This decision reflects a commitment to prioritizing visitor well-being in popular wildlife tourism spots across Karnataka.
