Karachi Gas Crisis: Winter Chill Triggers Low Pressure Woes
10 Jan
Summary
- Single-digit temperatures in Karachi have caused widespread low gas pressure.
- SSGC cites a 30 mmcfd shortfall from a field due to a technical fault.
- Gas supply to fertilizer plants is shut off to prioritize domestic use.

As Karachi plunges into single-digit temperatures this winter, residents face significant disruption due to critically low gas pressure. The natural gas supply, managed by Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), has dwindled, impacting daily life and forcing many households to delay meal preparations. This recurring winter issue compels citizens to seek costly alternatives like LPG cylinders.
The SSGC has confirmed a daily shortfall of approximately 30 million cubic feet of natural gas. This deficit stems from an unexpected technical problem at one of its production fields, reducing overall output. Consequently, certain city districts are experiencing lower-than-standard pipeline pressures, affecting cooking and heating.
In response to the gas crunch, the government has implemented a load management plan that prioritizes domestic consumption. Fertilizer plants have been shut down, and industrial closures are enforced weekly. The SSGC anticipates that the field issue will be resolved by early next week, expecting an improvement in the overall gas supply.
