Kanpur Zoo has welcomed a new resident, lioness Bijli, who arrived from Indore's Kamla Nehru Zoological Park on Monday. This move is part of a significant wildlife exchange program. Bijli was initially placed in the zoo's veterinary hospital for a thorough health examination.
Upon confirming her good health, Bijli was transferred to the dedicated lion enclosure. She will soon be introduced to Shankar, the zoo's one-and-a-half-year-old lion, increasing the zoo's big cat population to one lion and three lionesses.
Concurrently, eight-year-old hippopotamus Satish, a Kanpur native, is set to depart for Indore's zoo. This transfer required patient efforts from zoo officials, who spent several days encouraging Satish into a transport cage before his relocation could be finalized.
