Ganga's Pollution Load Slashed by Kanpur Tannery Upgrades

In Uttar Pradesh, significant strides have been made in curbing industrial pollution flowing into the Ganga River. The state government reported on July 3, 2026, that the construction of the Jajmau Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) in Kanpur, alongside the interception of the Sisamau drain, has dramatically decreased the industrial pollution load. The Jajmau CETP, inaugurated in December 2023, is now fully operational and treats tannery effluent laden with chromium, organic matter, and dyes.

This facility, with a 20 MLD capacity, complements the interception of the Sisamau drain. Previously, this drain discharged approximately 140 MLD of untreated sewage and industrial effluent directly into the Ganga. While water quality in the Kanpur stretch has seen notable improvements, challenges remain, particularly in meeting bathing-quality standards further downstream.

Further progress is evident in Mathura, where a 6.5 MLD CETP has been completed and is operational, serving industries including the Mathura Refinery and chemical manufacturers. All grossly polluting industries within the Ganga basin face annual third-party inspections, with non-compliance resulting in penalties or closure orders. The Central Pollution Control Board also conducts unannounced inspections to ensure adherence to discharge norms.
