Kanpur's Plant Turns Waste Water Into Power Plant Fuel

The Bingawan Tertiary Treatment Plant (TTP) in Kanpur is effectively conserving water by supplying 40 million litres per day (MLD) of highly treated wastewater to the Panki Thermal Power Plant. This treated water is utilized in the power plant's cooling towers and boilers, a critical application where superior water quality is essential for operational efficiency and cost reduction.
Utilizing advanced Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane technologies, the TTP processes sewage that has already undergone secondary treatment at the 210 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). This advanced purification yields water of quality nearly comparable to potable standards. The treated wastewater, previously discharged into rivers, is now a valuable industrial resource, significantly decreasing the thermal power plant's demand for fresh water.
This project, developed under the Tariff Policy-2016, aligns with the policy's encouragement for thermal power plants within a 50-km radius of STPs to use treated sewage. District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh inspected the Rs 249.92-crore project, highlighting it as Uttar Pradesh's first RO and UF membrane-based tertiary treatment plant and a groundbreaking model for wastewater reuse and industrial water management.
