Kanpur Chokes Under Diwali Smog as Air Quality Plummets

As of October 22, 2025, the city of Kanpur is grappling with a severe air pollution crisis in the aftermath of Diwali celebrations. According to data from the Pollution Control Board, the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) spiked to an alarming 250, indicating poor air quality, due to widespread bursting of firecrackers.

The rising trend in pollution has been consistent over the past week, with the AQI steadily increasing from 128 on October 15 to 206 by October 20. On the day of Diwali, October 22, the situation worsened further, with the Kidwai Nagar stadium reporting the highest AQI at 269, followed by NSI Kalyanpur at 258 and Nehru Nagar at 223.

Pollution control authorities have warned that the AQI level could rise even higher during the night as residents continue to burst crackers as part of post-Diwali festivities. They have advised senior citizens and people with respiratory issues to remain indoors, as the deteriorating air quality may cause breathing discomfort and related health problems.

Despite the air quality concerns, the city of Kanpur celebrated Diwali with great enthusiasm and fervor on October 20. Devotees worshipped Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, and Kuber, lighting earthen oil lamps and seeking wisdom and prosperity. The evening was filled with the sound of crackers, and the skyline glittered with colorful fireworks, creating a vibrant picture of festivity and joy.
