Jojari River Cleanup: Plantation & Waste Management Drive
12 Apr
Summary
- Plantation drives aim to improve ecological conditions along the Jojari river.
- Technical expertise sought for scientific management of industrial waste.
- Supreme Court urged curbing pollution amid environmental crisis.

The Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB) is implementing significant measures to address environmental issues impacting the Jojari river. A primary focus involves extensive plantation drives along and around the river to improve its ecological health. These coordinated efforts aim to ensure industrial development proceeds sustainably without compromising the environment.
To manage challenging waste from High Rate Trans Evaporation Systems (HRTS), the Board plans to collaborate with institutions like the National Institute of Hydrology. This partnership seeks scientific solutions for the hazardous industrial effluents common in textile clusters, which pose a risk of soil and groundwater contamination.
These actions come in the wake of a February 25, 2022, National Green Tribunal (NGT) order that levied Rs 2 crore penalties on RIICO and municipal bodies in Jodhpur, Pali, and Balotra for non-compliance with zero liquid discharge norms. Although appeals were filed in the Supreme Court, the apex court highlighted the severity of the environmental and public health crisis, urging a halt to appeals and a focus on pollution control.
A recent meeting reviewed water pollution from textile industries and environmental norm compliance. An action plan is being formulated to ensure effective implementation of pollution control measures and river remediation efforts by the RSPCB, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and local authorities.
