The Johnny Appleseed Park District has introduced notable changes throughout 2026. Ottawa Metro Park, a highly visited site, has seen its swimming pond converted into an accessible fishing lake, with walkways replacing concrete paths.
Significant expansion includes the Heron Hollow Wetlands, a 100-acre property focusing on re-establishing wetlands and reforestation with 46,000 new trees, a project funded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Additionally, the Beil's Buck Run Nature Area, featuring hiking trails and woodlands along the Auglaize River, opened to the public in June.
The district also continues its Cooperative Park Improvement Grant Program, allocating $150,000 annually to assist other political subdivisions in Allen County with outdoor projects. This initiative aims to enhance park facilities and nature areas throughout the county, funded primarily by voter-approved tax levies generating approximately $3 million annually.
