Jharkhand's Dung Power: Villages Go Green!
29 Mar
Summary
- 44 gobar gas plants serve 745 families across Jharkhand.
- Biogas reduces firewood reliance, improving rural health.
- Future plans include 10 more plants statewide.

Jharkhand is significantly advancing its clean energy agenda with the expansion of gobar gas plants under the GOBARdhan initiative, focused on converting waste into wealth. Launched in April 2018, this scheme aims to enhance village cleanliness, increase rural income, and generate energy and manure from organic waste.
Across the state's 24 districts, 44 gobar gas plants are now operational, directly benefiting 745 families. These plants provide a sustainable cooking gas alternative, lessening dependence on firewood and consequently improving the health of villagers by reducing smoke inhalation.
The initiative not only tackles solid waste management but also promotes environmental sanitation. By utilizing cow dung and agricultural waste, it helps reduce vector-borne diseases. Furthermore, the use of biogas decreases household expenditure on LPG, and the residual dung serves as nutrient-rich manure, boosting agricultural productivity.
With successful implementation, including the plants' utility during LPG shortages, the department is planning to establish approximately 10 more gobar gas plants in the next financial year. Households contribute minimally to plant maintenance, with decisions made by village committees.
