Jharkhand Cracks Down on Unregistered Pet Shops
19 Mar
Summary
- Pet shops and dog breeders must register within 15 days.
- Unregistered businesses face strict action from authorities.
- Registration ensures animal welfare and public health safety.

The Jharkhand Animal Welfare Board has initiated a statewide crackdown, requiring all pet shops and dog breeding centers to register within 15 days. Circulars have been sent to district animal husbandry officers, emphasizing that non-compliant establishments must register immediately or face stringent action.
Currently, only six breeding centers are officially registered in Jharkhand, with 15 more applications under review. The board highlighted that centers must meet strict criteria to continue operations. This registration process is vital for preventing animal cruelty and curbing the spread of zoonotic diseases like rabies and leptospirosis, which can affect humans.
Specialized teams will conduct follow-up inspections after the deadline. Veterinary experts have praised the mandate, noting that unregistered facilities often engage in unethical practices, such as selling puppies too early or keeping animals in cramped conditions. The initiative aims to ensure only kennels maintaining hygienic environments are allowed to function, thereby protecting both animals and customers.
