Jersey solar farm plans halted by public outcry
8 Feb
Summary
- Solar farm proposals were abandoned following public consultation.
- Jersey Electricity will not proceed with the Belle Fontaine site plans.
- Concerns raised included rural character and wildlife disruption.

Jersey Electricity has withdrawn proposals for a significant solar farm development at the Belle Fontaine site in St Martin. This decision follows a comprehensive public consultation period and discussions with the Crown, which owns the land.
The firm had previously outlined plans for a 5.2-megawatt agrivoltaic system, designed to cover approximately 20 acres of Crown land. This innovative approach aimed to allow solar panels to operate alongside agricultural activities, such as crop cultivation and livestock grazing.
However, local residents expressed considerable concerns regarding the potential negative impacts of the development. Key issues raised included the alteration of the parish's tranquil and rural aesthetic, as well as potential disruptions to local wildlife habitats and ecosystems.
