Jersey Shore Cliffs Threaten Lifeguard HQ
27 Mar
Summary
- Half of Upper Township Beach Patrol HQ perilously close to cliff edge.
- Persistent erosion has created steep cliffs along the Jersey Shore.
- Strathmere awaits delayed beach replenishment funding and project.

Severe beach erosion along the Jersey Shore has created alarming conditions, with Strathmere being one of the hardest-hit areas. Half of the Upper Township Beach Patrol headquarters building is precariously situated over a steep cliff, a direct result of relentless erosion. Officials have deemed the more than 20-year-old structure a potential hazard and have scheduled its demolition for Saturday. Lifeguards will operate from a temporary location for the upcoming season.
Residents who have frequented Strathmere for over two decades have observed a dramatic reduction in beach area and dunes. Storms, including those related to Hurricane Erin, have significantly impacted the coastline, leading to underwater beaches during high tide. Strathmere is scheduled for a beach replenishment project, which was previously postponed because federal funding was unavailable last year. However, a recent visit by Representative Jeff Van Drew and an Assistant Secretary of the Army has led to assurances of funding through the Army Corps of Engineers this year, with the project identified as a high priority.
